How to Care for Your Handmade Knitwear: A Complete Guide

How to Care for Your Handmade Knitwear: A Complete Guide

Your handmade knitwear is an investment in quality and craftsmanship. With proper care, these pieces can last for generations.

Washing

Hand wash is best. Fill a basin with cool water (30°C max) and add a gentle wool detergent. Submerge your garment and gently squeeze — never wring or twist.

Machine washing — If you must, use a wool/delicate cycle with cold water and place the item in a mesh laundry bag.

Drying

Never hang wet knitwear — the weight of the water will stretch it out of shape. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water (don't wring!), then lay flat on a clean towel. Roll the towel to absorb more moisture, then reshape the garment and lay flat to dry.

Storage

  • Fold, don't hang — Hanging stretches knitwear over time.
  • Use cedar or lavender — Natural moth repellents that smell wonderful.
  • Clean before storing — Moths are attracted to body oils and food stains.
  • Store in breathable bags — Never use plastic, which traps moisture.

Dealing with Pilling

Pilling is natural and doesn't mean your garment is low quality. Use a fabric shaver or a fine-tooth comb to gently remove pills. This actually improves the appearance of your knitwear over time.

Minor Repairs

Small holes can often be darned at home. Use a matching yarn and a darning needle to weave across the hole. For larger repairs, consult a professional.

With these simple care practices, your Vaino Wear pieces will remain beautiful and functional for years to come.
